Kitchen Update…A Sneak Peak

kitchensneakpeak

I hope you had a terrific weekend.  I spent a portion of my weekend working on the kitchen.  I finally broke down and painted!  Originally, I had planned to paint the room a dark charcoal.  Hoping for a deep, matte charcoal, I chose Knight’s Armor  by Olympic as the final color.

However, part way through the first coat I realized that it was 1. not bold enough and 2. had a bit of a navy undertone.  After going back to the drawing board, I decided to go BLACK.  I chose a warm black by Sherwin Williams, SW 6991 Black Magic.

As soon as I first strokes went up I knew it was the right choice.  I finished painting yesterday afternoon and love the dramatic changes!  After the final touches were in place I  briefly thought to myself… maybe I should paint every room in my house black…Before starting, I was nervous to go black.  I was afraid it would be too much, but I think I have found my new favorite wall color.  It feels so fresh and contemporary.  The charcoal was not bold enough for the space, it felt drab.

I still have a little work to do in the kitchen before the final reveal, I can’t wait to share!

Would you be bold enough to go black?

Master Bedroom Reveal…

Good morning!  I hope you had a terrific weekend.  I’m moving a little bit slow today, the weekend flew by around here.  I finally finished the curtain wall in the bedroom and spent part of my day yesterday taking photos of the finished master bedroom to share with you today.

The curtain wall behind the bed makes the room so cozy.  I feel like I am sleeping in a chic boutique hotel every night.  I hope to update the pillows soon, but overall I really love how it turned out!

When I first moved in, the bedroom was painted a reddish brown semi-gloss.  It was not ideal and I knew right away the wall color would have to go, below is the room before I moved in…

Master Bedroom Before

I quickly arranged my furniture into the room to get settled.  I set-up my DIY upholstered headboard in front of the window that looks onto the covered front porch.  The view out the front porch window is not spectacular so I decided to placed the bed on that wall and curtain it to make it cozy and to add a strong focal point to the space.  This photo was taken soon after I moved in…

Soon after I moved in, I stumbled upon what is now my new headboard!  I found it on clearance at TJ Maxx.

Immediately, I knew it was just what I needed to set the stage for the new room design.  It was perfect… a soft neutral upholstered headboard with nailhead trim.  A definite upgrade from the headboard above which I DIYed before I started blogging.

The wall color I chose compliments the natural woodwork.  It is a soft warm, gray which tones down the harsh orange undertones.  The color is Valspar Frappe.

The curtain wall was built using drop cloths from Lowe’s.  The oatmeal color and drop cloth texture works well with the soft neutral of the headboard and compliments the gray wall color, providing just enough contrast to add interest to the space.  I used drapery rings to hang the drop cloths.  This DIY project was very simple, but makes a huge impact.  I think the longest part of the process was steaming the drop cloths after they were hung :) .

Overall, I am very pleased with how it turned out.  Of course, it is not complete, but I think for now I will start working on another room…maybe the dining room.  I’m in the planning process for the next project.

Progress in the New House

Today I am excited to share some photos of the new house with you.  I packed my apartment last week and moved my furniture Friday.  I thought I had paired down a lot after the move from New Mexico, but I realized Friday, I still have a lot of stuff!  I managed to fill the whole house.  I am still in the process of unpacking but I know Jack, Gracie and I are going to love our new place…I even have some new DIY projects planned.  I hope to start the first one this weekend…

Here are a few progress photos.  I cannot wait to paint!  The wall colors in the bedroom and living room are driving me crazy.  The living room does not get a lot of natural light and the red is very depressing to me.  I have already selected the new paint color for the bedroom, painting will be starting very soon…

After painting, my first project is to curtain the wall behind the bed.  The wall I placed the bed on is the best location for the bed.  The window being covered by the headboard looks out onto the covered porch.  The view is not the best so I feel a curtain wall will be the best option for the space.

After the bedroom is painted, and the wall is curtained I am moving into the living room.  I really think this room needs lightened and brightened.  I love dark, cozy rooms, but this one is not working for me.  I also have a new pendant light to use in the living room!  I can’t wait.

Living room

I am not sure if I will move into the dining room or kitchen after the living room.  Fortunately, the walls in the remaining house are cream.

dining

The dining room is one of my favorite rooms in the house.  It will be fun to make it my own…I am thinking wide horizontal stripes may be in order for this room.

My other favorite room in the house is my office.  Friday night, as I was moving in, I realized this is by far the largest office I have had since I started working for myself over a year and a half ago.  It feels great to have a little extra room to move.  I even added a sleeper sofa for guests.  It also has a fireplace (non-working) that I love!

Finally, the kitchen is really large.  I have no idea what I am going to do to make it feel cozy.  I am excited about it because it gives me a lot more room to cook.  The kitchen in my apartment was a little too small to cook comfortably.

As you can see from the photos it has a long way to go, but I am happy to have more projects to work on.  I will not be traveling as much as I did when I was in my apartment so I will have more time to play around the house.  I do not think I will be moving again for awhile, so it’s time to start making this one my own.   I can’t wait to share the new projects with you…
