Tell Me Tuesday…BAM or SLAM!? Light or Dark?

Last week’s topic, curtain dividers, was one of the closest discussions we have had. It ended up as a SLAM by one vote!

Progress has gradually slowed to a stand still on my new apartment.  I have made it comfortable to live in, but am so torn between going dark and cozy or keeping it light and bright.  This week, I thought I would step in and ask you, instead of BAM or SLAM, LIGHT or DARK!?

  1. I think I prefer the light, but the version in the second image with the black accents in the furniture it truly my favorite. Feels very Elle Decor to me! M.

  3. I love both, which is often my problem of decision making. Can I go 50/50? The majority of the space light with maybe a dark bedroom.

  4. I agree with Katie. I’m equally torn because I love both looks also. I think keep it light with some dark rooms. Can’t wait to see what you decide. :)

  5. Depends on the room. I’m not super helpful, i know. For entryways, hallways, kitchens, I vote light. For bedrooms, offices, dens, and cozy spaces, I vote dark.

  6. Right now with the weather changing and it getting a little cooler, I’m more drawn to dark. But I personally like a light and bright house (better for the psychie). Maybe a room here or there dark would be good, but I think you’ll never regret going light. But dark walls with light furniture and lots of pops of white is pretty too.

  7. My vote – dark. With cold nights on their way, the dark room seems to wrap it’s arms around you – and knowing you it will be a tasteful color of dark. Some darks are NO,NO!

  8. Though I do like both, I am drawn to the lighter side a little more lately. That top white bedroom pic is screaming my name.

  9. Ok…looking like another 50/50 vote on this one! I say keep it LIGHT! I think a light and bright space will be perfect for you during this new phase in your life. Who wouldn’t love to start the day in a bedroom like that first photo? Bright and Beautiful…just like your future! :)

  10. Honestly, I love both, but not always for every space. Some spaces seem to need more of one than the other. Some just seem better suited to one over the other, whether it’s due to purpose/function or natural light conditions or lack there of. I do have to say that I’m not a lover of all light/wht or all dark. I have a deep affinity for contrast and texture and can take either just a touch or an almost overwhelming amount… Our family room faces east & has gone over to the dark side with one of those mystifying, deeper neutrals that has tones of grey, brown & green on the walls & an espresso accent wall (behind the tv/gallery wall). We’re loving the embracing atmosphere there! Our kitchen receives northern light & our plan is to embrace the lighting condition. We’ll keep the walls & upper portions light with minimal contrast & more metallics & reflective surfaces. Then ground the lower cabinets & flooring with mid-deeper tones. This way, the effect will shift depending on the light throughout the day/night. Light, bright & clean during the day & a bit more dramatic at night. Our master is next on our list, faces south & will likely be more dark than light. We love the moody sultriness the deeper tones bring to the space, especially at night.

Whichever way you go, I’m sure it will be fabulous!

  11. Definitely dark. Not too dark, just enough to be cozy.

  12. Dark, dark–and light! I feel oppressed by dark browns/woodtones, but I LOVE those gray rooms. I am planning to paint my own bedroom charcoal, and decorating it with scads of bright floral art, mostly abstract.

  13. I have favorite shades of light AND dark—I let the space lead me! I know that doesn’t sound the most helpful, sorry. Or put this way—I let light quality, the room-usage, and furniture be my guide. But I admit that I do lean towards darker tones/values in bedrooms.
And btw, two lesson I learned along the way–If a room is dark (by its natural light, no windows. . .) no amount of light or white paint is really going to make it brighter! Go dark if that’s what you like, play it up!
And the second–the colors you feel best wearing, are often the colors that will make you feel most comfortable in your home! Look at your closet for help!
Can’t wait to see more pictures of your decor and color choices!

  15. Dark! I think lighter touches can be added, however, I think it is more elegant.

  19. Dark for sure. I love how interesting and deep dark rooms feel. I want to hang out there forever! Light rooms seem like they are made for passing through… Too sterile.

  20. Hi there! I like a lot of light with dark touches in just the right places, such as the flooring, accessories, and perhaps a statement piece of furniture. It’s the best of both worlds and if done well it is very dramatic, while staying casually chic and warm blissfully cozy. I love that word “cozy.”

I know you will do a great job and will make the best decisions for your new place, take a few chances and step out of your comfort zone – decorating should be fun!

    Be blessed,

  22. I love both looks but since its an apartment and assuming its not that large, I’d go light to make it feel larger!

  23. How about light in all your living areas, to keep them cheerful and bright, and then a deep, dark, cozy color in the bedroom??? (I am about to do this very thing. Can’t wait!) Love your inspiration photos….especially that dark gray bedroom!
