There are two types of sconces. The first style extends from the wall and usually has a fabric or metal shade. An example of this style is the Princeton Senior Sconce from School House Electric and Supply, CO
Princeton Wall Sconce, School House Electric and Supply Co.
This style is often used to highlight a feature in a room, for example a bookshelf, or for extra task lighting. They are frequently used in small spaces where there is no room for a lamp, for example behind a sofa or behind the bed.
The second style lays flush against the wall. It is reminiscent of the wall mounted candelabra.
Dean Library Sconce, Circa Lighting
This style is typically used to add ambiance to a space. They add a little glitz and glam. You will often find them hanging above the fireplace, or in the bathroom on either side of the vanity mirror. This style is perfect to help you add a touch of whimsy to any space.
I have been oohing and ahhing over the variety of sconces on School House Electric and Supply Co. and Circa Lighting lately. Their styles are so different and yet I am torn between School House Electric’s fun industrial style and Circa Lighting’s polished and refined sense of style.

I’d have sconces hanging all over the place if they weren’t so expensive! Why is that?!

These are the greatest pictures. I love sconces – especially on a bookcase. I have to admit … when I first saw the title of the post I thought it said scones instead of sconces. I was all ready for some scone recipes. I am glad it was sconces – this waistline couldn’t take a scone recipe right now!

Elizabeth! Love these sconces and all the placement ideas – especially with that dreamy canopy bed! Wondering if you’ve seen any great ideas for non light fixture sconces – where to place them and what to put on top? I have two wrought iron ones that I just haven’t found homes for yet. Gosh I love all of these examples…my two favorite examples are the make-up table sconces (love those and I haven’t seen that image either!) and the reading nook. Have you checked out Urban Electric?
