Last week on BAM or SLAM we discussed black, glossy molding. The majority of my reader’s really like the look, I agree. I think it is a great way to add drama to a room.
BAM!
A couple week’s ago I had a question from a reader. She emailed me to ask if accent walls were still popular in design. I thought I would pose the question on this week’s BAM or SLAM…accent walls, are you a fan?

BAM or SLAM!?

Bam, for sure! Not something to do in every room, but I think it’s a great way to add interest and showcase a spot in your home.

I think you’ve found some *very* good examples. But many times an accent wall goes badly! I almost wish you would have found some ugly accent walls.
It’s all about context and most of the time I think it’s a SLAM.

I love the choices you posted for accent walls–and in these examples, I think it completely works. But—I have to go with a slam–overall–I tend to stay away from accent walls.
Inagree that these are good examples, but I gotta Slam. I’m over them.
Agreeing with the comments above… These are great examples (& I even have an accent wall in our home, that I hope is done well!) but the majority of the time the wrong wall is chosen in the wrong room. Not all architecture lends itself towards this look. I’m going to say it’s a BAM if done well

i say bam if well done, too- i have seen it poorly done, but i think it is a good way to add interest without creating too busy or dark of a space.

AGree with everyone else! These are great, but in general I dislike. Slam for me!

I’m on the fence as well, but I’m leaning toward a Slam for the accent wall. I think it depends on the space. I also think it comes down to preference. Some people are afraid of color, so if that is there way of getting that burst of color that they want so be it.

BAM! I think an accent wall (like a rug or tables) help define a space, especially if it’s a long, multi-use space and it add’s impact without going over board.

Though your examples don’t look too bad, overall, I’d say slam! Rarely are they done well. They usually are too abrupt and serve no purpose. Instead they create a second focal point…
BAM! It is the perfect way to infuse color or pattern with out over powering the space!

Bam! I think that it can interest to a space! Especially love the wallpaper!

Definiteyl a BAM! I was surprised to see all of the slams out there…especially after seeing your examples! Everything is a slam when not done well…right?!
Who could slam that wallpaper accent wall…beautiful!

I really like an accent wall. I hope it ends up as a BAM since I have one planned in my foyer. I think when done right it can add a lot of interest to a space.

I think that wallpapered accent walls are lovely, but painted accent walls seem non-committal to me. I guess I have to say, SLAM! I don’t say it that often!
When done right they are definitely Bam! But not everyone knows how to pull them off but for me an accent wall can be a big Bam! Your examples were all good ones!

Slam. I say go big or go home. Why limit great color or fabulous wallpaper to only one wall in a room?

Bam! when done right that is! But an accent wall is an easy way to add interest in a space.

For me, they are often a SLAM but there are definately great examples. I tend to prefer them when they are more subtle. So if someone wants to use a wallpaper on one wall, the background colour of the wallpaper is the paint colour for the rest of the room. The white walls with red accent wall is definately out!
So I think for me personally it’s a SLAM although it can work in some instances

I can take it or leave it–but it’s not a go-to design choice.
The right design in the right application is of course a Bam!
But even a good design in the wrong application–or vise versa–Slam.
You sure have an amusingly mixed bag of opinions!

I would definitely say BAM if done right. I love all of your above examples. I love seeing one stenciled wall or one striped wall, with a coordinating color on the other walls to add some interest and continuity.

Hmmm….tough one. I was ready to slam accent walls, but I love all of the images you posted. So maybe it’s a bam if done right???

Accent walls? Yes, if done correctly. They have to have a reason for being accented (entry way, focal art piece), and nothing else can be in the way of it. It is the focal point so no cluttering it up; keep it clean, neat and tidy and leave it as THE focus without anything to clash with it.
Absolutely Bam. I do not follow trends so much so I say whatever feels right and looks good – it is a personal choice. It does not have to be done in every room, though.

SLAM! I think you’ve picked some great examples of ones done well, but more often than not they aren’t good.
Elizabeth @ The Little Black Door recently posted..feet up or laying down
They definitely work in the examples you’ve shown, but i’ve seen a lot of bad accent walls. I think if it’s to highlight something like a chimney breast or a little alcove, it does add a bit of personality. But I’m SO over wallpapered accent walls. My overall vote: SLAM

Agree with alot of the commenters I am over the accent wall, SLAM! I am more attracted to rooms that flow!
BAM! Anything done not well, is always a SLAM (or a miss/missed opportunity). That to me is just a given, so I’ll always go with well done versions to determine somethings use & beauty. Just imagine that glossy black paint done poorly on those mouldings from the last BAM or SLAM…enough said. However, accent walls done the way intended, regardless of how dramatic or easily blended into the surroundings usually still have the desired effect. We just added one while doing a living room overhaul, so I very much believe they have their place. I wanted a bit of surprise, drama and texture added to an otherwise rather casual/uneventful space (we only have one living room, no family or rec room). It came out even better than I’d envisioned in my head. The walls you see as you enter the space from the most used rooms (dining & kitchen) are all a mid-toned, warm stone grey in eggshell finish and showcase our inviting seating . Then surprise you turn or pop down on the couch & are greeted with a wall cloaked in a basket weave textured wallpaper topped with rich dark chocolate satin paint. Currently working on the gallery wall with TV on said accent wall.
Total BAM, these guys are *everywhere* for a reason! They add so much to a room, but they definitely have to be done RIGHT…none of this “random super bright or dark colored wall” crapola…that would for sure be on my ****SLAM**** list…especially when it’s that burgundy color…yuck.

I’d have to say BAM when done well and while I love a wallpapered or stenciled accent wall, I’m not such a fan of the painted accent wall (though you have a couple of nice examples above).

I think anything done well or correctly can look AMAZING, so I would never rule ANYTHING out. But we’ve all seen our fair share of accent-walls-gone-bad so it’s tough to tell. I think they will always be IN because of their approachability. But doing it right is something to consider intensely before taking one on.
Bam! As long as it has a purpose or actually flows with the room.
