Last week on Decorating Tips for Renters we started the series with some tips for decorating your space with fabrics, if you missed it, you can check it out here. This week let’s talk about how to accessorize your rental to make it feel like home.
Make your Rental feel like a home by…
Dressing Up the Walls
Personalize your rental by collecting fun pieces and hanging them together as a gallery wall. Mix and match the frames, the art…have fun with it.
Don’t worry about not having the budget for fine art, display your collection of family snapshots, postcards, or even pretty shopping bags will do.

Use mirrors in a space to reflect something beautiful, or to make a space appear larger and brighter.
* Design Tip: When hanging things on your walls be careful not to hang them too high. A good rule of thumb, hang them at eye level or about 57″ inches from the floor.
Dressing Up the Floors
Many rentals are lacking when it comes to nice floors. Often times rentals will be covered in old, dingy carpet…want a quick fix?
Bring in bold geometric rugs to cover those dingy floors.
On a budget…
More tips…
Use trays to make your random items look tied together
Group items of varying heights, shapes, sizes and textures together to create interesting vignettes
Take off the doors of your kitchen cabinets (store them away) and show off your bold dishes
These open cabinets were lined with a bold, fun fabric, for more information, click here
Finally, Accessorize with things that you LOVE

The best way to personalize a space is accessorize with things that you have a personal attachment to… things that you love.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match styles. You’ll see in the photo above, three different metal tones paired together. Mixing and matching styles/metals, etc adds interest. It contributes to the feeling of things collected over time, making your space more interesting.
I hope this helps! Next week, we’ll talk about storage…

Great tips and inspiration photos. Love the framed shopping bags…such a fun and interesting display. One of the best things about a gallery wall is that it is always a “work in progress” and can evolve over time as you add more to it…or go on a shopping spree!

Great tips – as a current renter, I’m trying to dress this place up without painting with accessories and fabric. Thanks for showing my shopping bag gallery

I love that image with the big round mirror! You’ve given some great tips that here and certainly some projects that any renter would be able to do and make the space their own.

I’ve thought about doing the cabinet door thing- and inserting a fake cabinet back with some wall paper or something. But then I remember how I am crammed into this condo- and it would probably work against me to lose the space. Still trying to figure a way to make it work!
Thanks for the post- I also LOVE the bedside vignette!

I so wish I had these tips back when I was renting an apartment! These are fantastic; thank you for sharing them. The framed shopping bags are adorable. (Hm, wouldn’t those look fantastic in a girly powder room?)
