New Blog Designs

I have been really the busy the past  few weeks working on blog designs, which makes me excited!  Thank you for thinking of me.   Today I thought I’d share a few that I have just finished up…

1/2/3/4

I also wanted to take some time to talk a little about WordPress vs. Blogger.

Lately, I have been getting more and more emails from clients and reader’s asking about  making the switch to WordPress.  Have you thought about it?  If so, I highly recommend it.

I have told a lot of my reader’s this story, when they ask about switching…When I first started my blog, I started on Blogger and happily stayed on Blogger for 9 months.  Honestly, the only reason I decided to make the switch to WordPress was because I wanted to learn how to design on it and figured I should make my blog the “guinea pig.”  I migrated everything in November and haven’t looked back.  Today I can’t imagine going back to Blogger.

A couple things I love about WordPress…

The most important thing I like about WordPress.org (self-hosted) is that you have control over your blog.  Blogger is owned by Google, which means, your blog is owned by Google, even if you’re using a custom domain.  At any time they can delete your blog without warning.  The really scary thing is, it’s been known to happen.  On WordPress, you are in control of your blog.

The second thing I think is amazing about WordPress…the customization options and support.  I have had several reader’s and client’s emailing me lately because their email links are broken, or their social sharing buttons are broken on Blogger.

On WordPress and Blogger things happen, we are working with technology.  However, I feel that finding support on WordPress is much easier than it is with blogger…and don’t even get me started on the customization options with WordPress.

WordPress truly spoils you with their plugins.   There is a plugin for just about anything you could possibly want to customize on WordPress.

I know WordPress is not for everyone and I truly love designing blogs on WordPress and Blogger.  However, I did want to share a couple reason’s why I like WordPress because I have been getting more and more questions about it and figure many of you reading may similiar questions.  Please feel free to contact me if you have additional questions or if you’re ready to get started on a new blog design visit TMC Designs.

Have you thought about making the switch?  Or have you made the switch, I would love to hear your opinions.

Friday Photography Tips

(This week’s subject was Jack, my 8 year old Lab/Great Pyrenees.  Can you tell how thrilled he is?)

Last Friday, I asked you all to weigh in on whether you would like me to share some photography tips.  I had a lot of response from reader’s who said they would.   I plan to start sharing some of the things I learn, as I am learning, with you on Friday’s.

This week, I would like to start out by sharing a few of the resources I study to learn more about photography.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, ShootflyShoot was a great starting point. After sitting down and watching all of the videos in one sitting, I was understanding manual mode.  That afternoon, I jumped up from my computer, put in in manual and haven’t looked back.

Before I watched the ShootflyShoot tutorials, I was lost.  I was really intimidated to even put my camera in manual mode.

I thought I would be trying to juggle composition, ISO, apeture, shutter speed, lighting all at the same time.  I wondered how I was going to handle it all.

You do have to think about all of things when you are shooting, but it is not as difficult as I thought thanks to a good base.  Kevin and Josh really break it down to make manual mode easy to understand.

The second set of tutorials I rely on are on Life with My 3 Boybarians.  Darcy is a professional photographer and graphic designer.  I have been following her tutorials 31 Days to a better photo.  The tutorials are very helpful,  she really breaks it down to make photography concepts easy to understand.

I recently found two websites Cambridge in Colour and  Digital Photography School that have a wealth of free photography tips, and tutorials.  I just started reading them, but I know I am going to be going back often.  I found them through a photography Q & A session on Fly Through Our Window.

I hope this helps to get you pointed in the right direction.  I will share a few more next week.

Happy Weekend!

Decorating Tips for Renters

One of my reader’s emailed me a few weeks ago and asked me if I could share a few simple decorating tips for renters.  She and her husband recently moved into a rental home and they are limited to what can they can do to make it feel like “home.”

I thought I would run a small series over the next few weeks on easy ways to decorate a rental.  Here are a few simple tips to get them started on the right track…

 Soften your Space with Fabric…

On the walls
Add color and pattern to your rental by framing fabric and hanging  it on the walls
.
or wrap a large piece of plywood in a fun fabric and prop it against the wall.
On the windows
Take down those rental mini-blinds (save them to hang back up when you leave)
and soften up your windows by hanging curtains.
On the furniture
Bring new life to old furniture with slipcovers

Create a focal wall in the bedroom with an upholstered headboard.

Use throw pillows as an easy, inexpensive way to add color, pattern and  your style to a rental.

Next Thursday we’ll talk accessories…
