We are slowly making progress on our new kitchen counter tops. Things have been moving a little slow because of the holidays, but we are making progress!
We currently have one side installed. Now, we are just waiting for the veneer edging to come in the mail so we can stain it. If you missed our original post about using solid, oak doors from Habitat for Humanity ReStore to build counter tops, you can read about it here.
So far we have…
1. Created a template from the original counter top.
2. Sanded the door, and marked our cuts
4. Started the install on the left side of the kitchen
5. Our door was a little too short, so we will have to use a little wood filler.
6. It is officially in place, but we still have a lot of work to do
We still have to patch the two pieces with wood filler, add the red oak veneer edging, stain and install subway tile for the new backsplash.
But…I think we’ve come a long way from 1950′s laminate!
What do you think?

That’s crazy brilliant! What a great solution to such a big problem. Cannot wait to see it finished and how they work for you.
Making big progress….I have butcher block counter tops and I am very happy with them…I think you will be so ecstatic you used these doors, the look will be wonderful! Great job and a very frugal alternative!
It’s looking awesome. What a great idea to use old doors. I can’t wait to see them all finished.
Creative! What a fantastic way to reuse and recycle, Elizabeth. It’s looking great!
I LOVE it. Are you going to use it like butcher block and cut on it or be careful…either way it is great!
Absolutely inspired!! What a wonderful aging process these will have, too. Love.
Lookin good looking good!! I can’t wait to see it finished!!
I’m loving it! Very exciting!
I think it is looking great. That was quick!
awesome!! it is looking really good…we finished painting our cabinets – and just have 1 corner one that really doesn’t want to give us a hint on how it was attached before to open and close properly…hmmm…
I think it is beautiful. You must be so excited with the way your new kitchen is turning out so far.
You are too smart girlfriend! I am totally impressed!!!! Your hubby is a wonder as much as you are! What a talented pair! Kudos!
Wow Elizabeth!! What a difference the wood countertop makes to the space! Impressive reinvention of doors you creative girl! (and hubby!) So excited to see this project progress.
Gurrl, I love it! And I’m not just saying that because I just painted my cabinets white and installed butcherblock countertops. Are doing a white sink or stainless! I’ll post mine in a few days and check back on yours too. Carry on with it!!
Wow, it is looking great! I can’t wait to see it finished. Brilliant to reuse doors!
I can’t believe those are doors! Way to think outside the box–great idea! They’re gonna look great:)
Love! I want to touch that new countertop! You must be so excited – it really looks great. And with the subway tile installed you’re going to really love your new look.
I think it’s great! So much fun to watch the progress!
I love the changes, girl! I can’t believe how much the wood warms up that space…you are too right, much better than the 1950′s laminate…but let’s be honest, laminate is not exactly pretty, right? (c: I can’t wait for it to be all finished (and I’m sure you can’t, either!!!)!
I’m still so impressed by the idea to use doors! You’re sort of a genius.
Wow, great job looking good. And cheap, my favorite part!
This is something you can be proud of for years to come!!! Beautiful job I must add as well.
