Kitchen Countertop Update

We are slowly making progress on our new kitchen counter tops. Things have been moving a little slow because of the holidays, but we are making progress!

We currently have one side installed. Now, we are just waiting for the veneer edging to come in the mail so we can stain it. If you missed our original post about using solid, oak doors from Habitat for Humanity ReStore to build counter tops, you can read about it here.

So far we have…

1. Created a template from the original counter top.

2. Sanded the door, and marked our cuts

3. Cut

4. Started the install on the left side of the kitchen

5. Our door was a little too short, so we will have to use a little wood filler.

6. It is officially in place, but we still have a lot of work to do

We still have to patch the two pieces with wood filler, add the red oak veneer edging, stain and install subway tile for the new backsplash.

But…I think we’ve come a long way from 1950′s laminate!

Tell Me Tuesday…BAM or SLAM (Holiday edition)!

This week, I wanted to run another holiday edition. I am so excited to put up my Christmas tree, I can hardly stand it! Do you have yours up yet?

For as long as I can remember, I have always put my tree up the day after Thanksgiving. I started the tradition when I was 13. The day after Thanksgiving, I would ask my mom to drive me downtown to the Farmer’s Market, where I would search until I found the perfect 5 foot Christmas tree.

We would load it on top of the car, take it home and my dad and I would lug it upstairs to my bedroom. I would spend the rest of the evening wrapping each individual branch with little white lights and pulling out all of the ornaments my parent’s had collected for me over the years to dress the tree.

My family thought I was crazy for 1) putting a 5 foot Christmas tree in my room and 2) putting it up so early. They would always wait until mid-December, but I couldn’t wait that long. Putting up the Christmas tree was always my favorite way to start the holiday season.

This is the first year, since I was 13, that I have not decorated the Christmas tree Thanksgiving weekend. We spent Thanksgiving in Santa Fe, NM with my cousin and some friends. Sunday, we tried to go to the nursery to pick-up the tree, but they were closed! We went back again yesterday afternoon, and closed again. I cannot start decorating the rest of the house until the tree is up. Hopefully, we can get it up this week, but my question for you this week is…
