Tell Me Tuesday…BAM or SLAM!? Dots, Dots, Dots

BAM! for Canopy Beds

This week, let’s discuss polka dots in interiors. As many of you know, I love stripes!  In my opinion, stripes one of my favorite ways to add a graphic punch to a space.  They are neutral enough to pair with more dominant patterns and colors and graphic enough to stand alone.

Polka dots work in much the same way.  They are graphic, yet neutral.  You can play them up to make a bold statement, or they can rest quietly in the background of your design.  Dots can be sophisticated, add a child-like element or a touch of whimsy…

Polka Dots, Are you a fan!?

Happy Weekend…and a Happy Father’s Day to my Dad!

I would like to wish a Happy Father’s day to all of the father’s out there this weekend, especially mine!  I feel so blessed that I am so close to my dad.

One of the main reason’s I fell in love interior design, old houses and do-it yourself projects is because of my dad.  Growing up, he and I would spend hours in the car driving through old neighborhoods talking about architecture and how we would love to bring an old property that we saw back to life.  To this day we still walk around town talking about saving this property or that.

When I am stumped on a project I always call dad knowing he will have a solution.  Below are a few projects that he has helped with or advised on over the past couple of years on The Mustard Ceiling…

Charleston Apartment-  (this little apartment was barely liveable before we tackled it)

My Bedroom in Progress (he painted and hung the drapery rods while I was out of town one day)

We agree on a lot where design is concerned, but we don’t always see eye to eye.  Dad is not a fan of gray or black (two of my favorites), recently he could not understand why I painted my kitchen and bathroom black.  He’s a little more traditional, I tend to go a little more transitional in design, but it is always fun to have his opinion.

This weekend, both of my brothers are driving into town to celebrate Father’s Day weekend.  I am excited to have everyone in for the weekend to celebrate.  What are your plans?

Have a lovely weekend!

Tasty Thursday: Hummus En Fuego

I love a good hummus recipe.  Two of my favorite recipes include; Kalamata Olive Hummus, and Spicy Black Bean hummus.  Recently, while searching pinterest I found a recipe for Avocado hummus…I think I may have to try that next time.  This week, I was craving hummus and did not have any tahini.  I remembered  a recipe in my file that uses toasted walnuts in place of tahini and I thought I would give a try…it was so good I wanted to share it with you today…

Hummus is the perfect appetizer, snack or lunch.  I have been eating mine this week on pita with chopped tomato, romaine, cucumber, green pepper, kalamata olives and a little feta.  It is very refreshing and light for summer.

 Hummus En Fuego

Serving size: Approximately 2 1/2 cups

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 c. extra-virgin olive oil
  • 3/4 c. walnuts- toasted
  • 1 can of garbanzo beans, drained
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • juice from 1/2 lemon
  • 1/2 c. hot water
  • dash of crushed red pepper flakes
  • dash of cumin

Prep:

The original recipe called for hot pepper oil, I did not have time to make it, but I will include the directions below:

Hot Pepper Oil: Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan for a couple of minutes.  Once the oil is hot, remove from heat and stir in 1 1/2 tsp. of crushed red pepper flakes.  Set aside and let cool for a day, until the flavors really develop.

I added a dash of crushed red pepper to mine to add a little heat.

Hummus:

Toast the walnuts lightly.  Once they have been toasted, toss them in the food process and blend until they are a sandy texture.  Next, add garbanzo beans, garlic, lemon juice, crushed red pepper and cumin.  Process until smooth.  Slowly add water a little bit of a time and continue to puree until the hummus is creamy and smooth.  Taste and adjust the seasoning to your liking.

Serve with toasted pita, or fresh veggies.  Enjoy!
